Counseling Q&A

What is counseling?

Counseling involves discussing your problems with a suitably qualified therapist or medical professional. It’s probably best known as a primary treatment for those with mental health conditions but has many other uses. PWH Fertility Evaluations uses counseling to help people having fertility problems.

Infertility — not conceiving after trying for a year (or six months if you’re a woman over 35) — can significantly affect you and your partner’s emotional, physical, and financial well-being. The decisions you make about infertility treatment also greatly impact your future.

Counseling helps you navigate what can be an immensely trying and stressful experience. You learn why you’re experiencing fertility issues, how to improve fertility, and the options when natural conception is unlikely or impossible. You can also benefit from genetic counseling if hereditary diseases could pose a risk to you or your baby.

Why should I consider counseling for infertility?

Infertility raises numerous questions and requires frequent decision-making that can be difficult to cope with, especially if you’re newly diagnosed. Fertility counselors help you process all the information and ensure you understand your options and what each one involves.

Your infertility counselor guides you through alternatives like in vitro fertilization (IVF), surrogacy, and other complex choices that you might face. They help you make decisions that are right for you and provide invaluable support along your fertility journey.

What choices can fertility counseling help me make?

PWH Fertility Evaluations counseling can help you make informed choices about treatments such as medication management.

Fertility drugs are the foremost treatment for women when ovulation disorders cause infertility. These drugs typically mimic natural follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), which trigger egg release (ovulation induction). They can also produce better or extra eggs in women who are ovulating. Examples include:

Clomiphene citrate

Clomiphene citrate increases FSH production. It’s often the first ovulation induction medicine Dr. Mohsin prescribes, particularly in women under 39.

Letrozole

Letrozole is an aromatase inhibitor that has a similar effect to clomiphene citrate. It’s often prescribed for women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Gonadotropins

Gonadotropins stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple eggs or help the eggs mature and trigger their release.

Dr. Mohsin doesn’t perform IVF but offers comprehensive counseling to people interested in this option.
